Portraits are all about two things: personality and light.
When taking a portrait, I want to capture the essence, the personality of an individual. I also like to use light by effectively casting shadows on the subject to add drama or a sense of dimension. Flat lighting seldom works, but, in the case of the fifth image below, it can be used under the right circumstances. In that shot, I wanted to capture the subject's bright-eyed look with just a hint of shadow, almost flat lighting.
